FOUNDED: 1786
ORIGIN OF BOROUGH: The town plot laid out by Bayard and
Mackay in 1787 did not include nearly all of present Elizabeth
Borough. Elizabeth Town, as originally plotted, was on the river
front of Fallen Timber Run and extending up the river to the edge of
the present Bayard Street. As a result of the industrial
development, settlement grew in population, with homes or other
buildings erected on most of the lots in the original plan. In time
there came a demand for enlarged borders for the plotted town. The
first such move was an extension of the lot plan at the southern
end, laid out in 1833 by Samuel Walker. The Walker extension was
followed soon by a move for incorporation of the town as a borough,
and application was made to the State Legislature for a charter of
incorporation. Charter was granted in a special act, adopted by the
body on 4/2/1834 and receiving the approval of Governor Wolf three
days later, making it a law.
